That would be a nice ride - I ought to try that sometime. 2 other rides I'd like to do on my bike are along Eskdale and back and also Wasdale (road riding - my bikes are road bikes) - but not on a weekend of course! ;-)
The forest tracks are reasonably smooth just a few sections where its little rough but probably no where near as bad as some of the Scottish estate roads! Two wheels certainly speeds up the time taken to get up & down the valley :)
I've done (many years ago!) a loop up Wasdale to Burnmoor Lodge returning over Boat How & down Mitredale which from what I can remember was a pretty good route.
