Hill Lists

Hill bagging (also known as Peak Bagging) is an attempt to climb all the summits on a particular list. There are several lists solely specific to the Lake District & Cumbria and many more that cover the whole of the UK. I've added a selection of popular lists some I'm not currently collecting, some I am & others I've 'accidently' bagged. Of course some of these lists I may never complete!

Wainwrights : These are a selection of 214 fells included in the seven volume series written by the iconic fell walker & guide book writer Alfred Wainwright, this is a subjectic list with no height/drop criteria. In 1974 an additional volume 'The Outlying Fells' was published this comprised 56 walks taking in 116 additional summits and increased the number of Wainwrights to a total of 330. Birketts - Complete Lakeland Fells: The Birketts cover a total of 541 Lakeland tops over a height 1000 feet and includes the majority of the Wainwrights Fells listed in the book 'Complete Lakeland Fells' by Bill Birkett.

Synges - The Lakeland Summits: These are a list of 646 summits over 300m contained in the book 'The Lakeland Summits' by Tim Synge. The 646 summits listed are divided into fells (requiring 30m re-ascent/drop to qualify) or subsidiary tops.

Hewitts : A Hill of England, Wales or Ireland over Two Thousand feet with a drop of 98 feet covering the UK South of the Scottish Border. Compiled by Alan Dawson and originally published in The 'Relative Hills of Britain' & when updated re-published in 'The Hewitts and Marilyns of England'.

Nuttals : The definition of a Nuttall is any summit over 2000ft with a drop of 50ft and the list was compiled by John & Anne Nuttal, published in their two volume books 'The Mountains of England & Wales'.

Marilyns : Marilyns (are hills with a relative height of 150 metres (492 ft), regardless of absolute height, and are listed in 'The Relative Hills of Britain' by Alan Dawson, published by Cicerone Press. (Marilyn News Centre)

I had been walking in the Lakes for over 30 years when I caught the hill bagging bug so in 2010 armed with some blank lists I began walking my way through them. There are several online hill-logging web sites that contain a great deal of information & mapping, one that I found essential is the Database of British and Irish Hills (DoBIH) and Harold Street  is also worthy of a mention.

Lakeland Tarns : Tarn Bagging or Coopering (after Heaton Coopers - The Tarns of Lakeland) is another list ticking pastime of collecting mountain tarns. I'm not entirely sure what the rules are; whether you have to swim, paddle or skim stones to classify one as bagged. Another comprehensive list of tarns can be found in John & Anne Nuttal's, two volume books 'The Tarns of Lakeland' sadly out of print, however an online list by the same authors can be found here : Tarn List

Grahams : A Graham is a Scottish hill between 2000 & 2499ft with a drop of 150m. This gap between the Donalds & Corbetts was originally known as the Lesser Corbetts was originally published in April 1992 but was renamed in memory of Fiona Torbett who published her own list in November of the same year. A complete list of the Grahams with some background information & a list of compleators can be found in TACit Table publication 'The Grahams & the New Donalds' compiled by Alan Dawson.

Donalds & New Donalds : In 1935 Percy Donald published a list of hills in the Scottish Lowlands over 2000ft. His original list involved a complicated formula for determining separate hills & tops. Alan Dawson simplyfied the original Donald list classifying a hill as one that had a drop of at least 30m, creating The New Donalds. A complete list of the Donalds with some background information & a list of compleators can be found in TACit Table publication 'The Grahams & the New Donalds' compiled by Alan Dawson.
