Skiddaw & Co - via the snowy trade route

The hills looked a little hit & miss this morning - cloud seemed to be licking most of their summits so making  a final decision was difficult! Something close seemed sensible & since its been a while since I've been up Skiddaw's tourist route, this seemed a good option as any. Lack of the Summer hordes and a fresh covering of snow was a bonus.

Howell Memorial, weather could head either way - forecast predicts an improvement :)

Lonscale Fell from the Skiddaw motorway...

Skiddaw Little Man is cloud free but Skiddaw itself is still obscured...

looking back to Lonscale Fell, as the cloud just begins to lift off Blencathra...

Longside Edge my usual approach...

quiet on the summit & rewarded with a rare view...

Skiddaw's summit trig...

dark skies and a healthy hint of wind chill - made lingering not an option...

most of the fells where now cloud free...

icy fence on the way to Skiddaw Little Man...

view back to Skiddaw...

Skiddaw Little Man...

another fence, the way to Lonscale Fell from jenkin Hill...

and looking back...

Lonscale Fell's summit...

and the more worthwhile Lonscale Pike...

glance back up...

out of the snow & returning to the car...

zoom to Helvellyn from Latrigg...

Latrigg's summit, too close not to make the short trip up...

Skiddaw range and a huge amount of blue sky...

even more towards Bass...

  1. Wow! when did you get more snow? We got a dusting a couple of days ago but it had gone an hour or so later when the sun had been out a while. That looks really nice. Skiddaw's still my absolute favourite mountain in snow :-) Great photos :-) Jealous!

    1. It came on Friday (21st) & fortunately lasted long enough until I could get out, everything has been in cloud today so I'm not sure if there is any left now :( A lot of people say Skiddaw is boring - personally I think they are wrong its one of my favourites :D
      Thanks Simon

    2. I get frustrated that people all think Skiddaw is boring. It's becoming one of my favourites too :-) I think they must always plod up the Jenkin Hill path and back, miss out Little Man and Lonscale etc and always go back down the same way. But even the Jenkin Hill path is great in snowy weather (I wouldn't generally do it without snow though).

  2. It's at its best when the gate posts can just be seen through the snow ;)
