Raven Crag & The Benn - Plan B Birkett hunting

The forecast for this morning was favourable & stupidly I ignored the North Western Fells which where free of cloud and pressed on through Keswick heading South. However the view of the Helvellyn fells shrouded in dank mountain mist from Castlerigg, was a game changer, time for a plan B. In the central fells I have one remaining Birkett top : The Benn, an often overlooked (by me anyway!) lump behind Shoulthwaite Farm.

Plenty of parking on the old road, mist licking The Benn, oddly parking is restricted to 2 hours?

according to the forecast stone at Soulthwaite campsite it should be fine...

shortcut through the woods...

Goat Crag & Shoulthwaite Gill look interesting, just a shame the forestry plantations spoil the view...

tucked away in the trees...

I'm not sure of its purpose, a nearby feed bin suggests it may be for Pheasant shooting???

of course the weather had deteriorated by the time the summit was reached...

I expect the views from The Benn are normally pretty good...

Raven Crag briefly looms out of the mist, although Thirlmere remained hidden...

I presume this doesn't apply to walkers???

at least United Utilities have finally cleared the fallen trees...

oddly the footpath sign is now on the summit???

again no view...

not even of the dam...

just for completeness the Birkett Castle Crag...

& hill fort...

the dog claims the summit first...

defensive ditches???

and a quick glance back...

Raven Crag dominates the view on the descent, slightly awkward thanks to several fallen trees...

I had originally considered returning to the car via High Rigg but with the damp I just couldn't be bothered...

forestry machinery, it used to be a common sight during my child hood but you rarely see them now...
