Hayeswater to be retired after 100 years of service

Hayeswater a small reservoir in the shadow of High Street was originally dammed in 1908 to provide drinking water for the Ullswater area. In 2005 it was declared surplus when a new pipeline was built providing the area access to water from the Haweswater reservoir.

United Utilities are restoring the tarn to how it once was, by removing the two by fourteen metre weir it is hoped natural ecological process, like eel migration, will happen again. The restored Hayeswater will be 2 metres lower than the current reservoir and roughly three quarters of the size
