Whitbarrow - An opportunist Marilyn & Wainwright Outlier

Another opportunist Lakeland Marilyn & Wainwright Outlier. Pretty straightforward ascent and I returned by the same route as I didn't have time to follow the full circular route from the Wainwright guide. Which is a shame as the limestone pavements are probably worthy of a more prolonged visit!

I parked near the entrance to Witherslack School...

only to find a permissive parking area a little further down the lane...

the footpath is clearly waymarked...

& oddly skirts the school's playing field...

the climb is through quite thick woodland containing many mature Yews...

stile at the end of the steep section, leading to...

Whitbarrow Nature Reserve...

the Yews give way to Silver Birch...

Limestone escarpments...

& pavements...

summit...

Memorial monument "This Reserve Commemorates CANON G.A.K. HERVEY 1893-1967 Founder of the Lake District Naturalists Trust"...

the Wainwright route...

but I returned the same way...

windswept Birch...
