I parked near the entrance to Witherslack School...
only to find a permissive parking area a little further down the lane...
the footpath is clearly waymarked...
& oddly skirts the school's playing field...
the climb is through quite thick woodland containing many mature Yews...
stile at the end of the steep section, leading to...
Whitbarrow Nature Reserve...
the Yews give way to Silver Birch...
Limestone escarpments...
& pavements...
summit...
Memorial monument "This Reserve Commemorates CANON G.A.K. HERVEY 1893-1967 Founder of the Lake District Naturalists Trust"...
the Wainwright route...
but I returned the same way...
